After one of his first ventures exposed the wide-eyed 21-year-old to the shadier side of business, replete with dishonesty, broken friendships and inequitable wages, Isaac cut his losses and moved on. He had put his all into something that he believed in, only to watch it all come crashing down around him. Isaac would not be discouraged by the people he trusted but was betrayed by; he chose to learn from the experience, pulling something positive out of a painful situation. According to The WSJ’s report, the deal’s terms were not disclosed, but include the hi5 website and user base.

Hi5 used to be among the top three social networks in 2008, behind MySpace and Facebook, but suffered as Facebook began to move into international markets. Since then, hi5 has tried to remain competitive by reinventing itself as a social gaming company. In February of 2010, it acquired the social game developer Big Six, whose platform was to become a part of the hi5 network. Earlier in the year, the company suffered from layoffs and also hired a new CEO, Bill Gossman.

For Ziff Davis, which was acquired and ‘relaunched’ as a digital-only media publishing company by former Time Inc. exec Vivek Shah in partnership with PE firm Great Hill Partners back in June 2010, this is the fourth acquisition in the past twelve months.

If I asked you which of the major social sites you thought sent us the most traffic, you might think it was Twitter. After all, the TechCrunch Twitter account has over 1.7 million followers. When you compare this to the (just under) 250,000 fans our Facebook TechCrunch page has, it should be no contest, right? Wrong.

The truth is that if this were October of last year, you would have been right in thinking that Twitter was our top referrer in terms of social websites. But since that time, Facebook has far surpassed Twitter in terms of traffic coming our way each month. In fact, Facebook.com is now sends nearly double the traffic that Twitter.com does. This is probably due to the fact that last November, we added Elin, our excellent community manager, who curates and engages with people from our feed on Facebook. As a loving mother, I work hard to make sure my children know they are loved. At one point in my life, went to great measures to make sure they were always comfortable and life felt “easier” for them.

I have learned, the hard way, that this is what creates a feeling of boredom, lack of strength and awe for the life experience they chose to have.

Computer games often make young boys aggressive and inpatient. While, limiting their connection to community, family and ultimately mother nature.

Although I would not want to harm my children on purpose, I do now realize that in life, we need struggles and challenges. Not just sports, but real problems and practice at solving them on our own. Even making mistakes.

In America and other industrialized countries, our youths right of passage is more about what they can get or not get, material items like a cell phone or driving a car. This breeds consumers, not real men and women.

How many times do we say “oh, i am going to pamper myself today, do something fun, lets go shop” if you think about it, is it really fun? maybe once in a while, but for me, i crave real experiences.
